Rental woes
Tourist rentals, especially in dense places, cause many problems.
Complaints seem to not be the solution anymore. The light and noise pollution and all the fun that comes with families arguing on vacation or those wanting to party like it’s 1999 continues.
Although my wife and I have only lived here for four years, we try to do a lot for the community. So, when I am met with adversity from the county, it drags at my little, teeny soul.
Face-palm spoiler alert: “The Airbnb owner has just as much right to use their place in any way they see fit, just as you can do what you want on your property.”
Uh, no. Any time you need a permit, it is not a right. A privilege is not a right.
I could run a nice spray paint mural business on my lot, sure! Heck, I have every right to do so. And, just like the owners of the B&B, I’ll avoid all contact from all complaints! I’ll also not talk to the other homeowners about their thoughts about my new venture! I’ll just do as I please.
After all, I have every right to run a business in my quiet residential neighborhood.
Well, karma just got me, as I gave myself two black eyes from face-palming myself as I typed it.
Bureaucracy, thy name is Hawaii County. Why? Stick up for residents who live in residential areas.

Try H-POWER?
Regarding the “Recycling changes” story in the Nov. 24 issue of the Tribune-Herald, maybe it’s time for H-POWER on this island?
Some will agree, while others will disagree.
Those that disagree on H-POWER, should we just continue to keep on dumping everything into the landfill and let our children, and their children. worry about it later?
H-POWER seems to be working in Honolulu.

Fair road taxes
To be fair, road taxes must reflect both the miles traveled and the weight of the vehicle, because this is, if anything, more relevant as a factor in creating wear and tear on our roads.
The fees should be payable each time someone renews their safety sticker, because this is the only time a third party observes and documents the mileage of the vehicle.
Electric vehicles and fuel-efficient vehicles tend to be lighter than traditional vehicles and therefore there would continue to be an advantage to those parties choosing to operate the former.
